Answering Questions in Spanish
Answering questions in Spanish is like playing a game of catch. One speaker throws a ball and the other catches it and throws it back. Sometimes you just have to add a "Sí" or "No, no" and throw the ball back. Other times you have to just change a letter and send the ball back.  Since Spanish doesn't have the word "Do" to help identify questions, often we use the same words in the question and answer.  Let's look at some examples.

¿Hablas español? Do you speak Spanish?

The question is asked in the informal "you" conjugation which is marked by the S at the end of the verb.  You will answer with the first person singular "I" which in Spanish is a verb marked by an O.

Hablo español. I speak Spanish.

If we ask the reverse, we just switch the endings the other way.

¿Hablo español?  I speak Spanish?

Hablas español.  You speak Spanish.

If you get in the habit of looking at the endings of the verbs, you can just do a simple flip to answer more quickly.  If the verb in the question ends in S, you will answer with a verb ending in O.  If the verb in the question ends with O, you answer back with S.

Remember that some verbs are irregular and don´t end in O in the first person singular (ESTAR - estoy).  You´ll have to adjust.  Also, if you´re in a formal situation, you will use the Ud. form of the verb rather than the tú form, but the idea is the same.

What about if the question is in the third person singular?

¿Habla español Juan?

I call these homeruns because you don´t change the verb at all.  The verb will be the same in the question and answer - habla.

¿Habla español Juan?

Juan habla español.

¿Come Ana?

Ana come.

These simple tricks will simplify answering questions.  You may have to add additional information like "Sí, ..." or "No, no..."  You can even leave out the name in the your answer since it is implied by the form of the verb.

¿Estudia mucho Antonio?

Sí, Antonio estudia mucho or Sí, estudia mucho.

No, Antonio no estudia mucho or No, no estudia mucho.

This diagram shows the pattern that you should memorize.
